Research: Applying Music Video Theory To Passenger 'Let Her Go'

Passenger's "Let Her Go" explores numerous music theorists ideas whilst providing the audience with an emotive essence. Listeners may feel like that they can relate to the song, as well as reflecting on the past or present.

At the exposition of the music video, Sven E. Carlsson's theory consisting of the different types of perfumer/artists is established, it could be argued that Passenger is the 'commercial exhibitionist'. evidence to support this could,be that the music videos features the artists promoting himself on stage, as well as being in the spotlight. however, other members on the stage are feature, alternately suggesting that they collectively share the spotlight. For example, the backing singer and the pianist have camera time in addition to the singer himself.  This music video supports key theorist E. Ann Kaplan's 'hybrid' idea, this argues that music videos  were a combination of advertisement and entertainment, this is evident within  this video as  the artist is selling himself as a performer.

As the music video progresses, it is seen that Diane Railton's theory of different types of music video is relative to 'Let Her Go'. It could be suggested that  this music video is part pseudo-documentary and part narrative. The element of a pseudo-documentary is seeing 'behind the scenes' life of the artist. This is supported by the footage of the director/manager moving  and organising the equipment, alongside footage of Passenger sitting on the floor, seemingly relaxed. In addition, Goodwin's theory is included in the music video as there may be demands of the record label of which enables the artist to portray themselves in such as way, in order to focus on their particular demographic. Due to the fact that the video is performance based, the lyrics are not illustrated through any type of visuals, this may be argued to convey more emotion from the artist himself, as he is features in a large majority of the video.

Furthermore, high frequency of cuts and graphic elements, a theory of Keazor and Wubenna, partially featured within ' Let Her Go'. This is not extremely evident within this song as it is more olive and aims to connect with the listener, therefore a high frequency of cuts would not be as appropriate for the motive of this video. However, there is a short section of the video of which consists of a such duration of frequent cuts. As well as this, synchronisation of editing to the beat is include within the video, this is pleasing to the audience. Lastly, the idea of the internet being a 'visual jukebox', is supported further as within the 21st century, individuals rely on the internet, and social media, to provide them both the newest music. This differs drastically to the previous music video platforms, such as 'Top of the Pops' and 'MTV' as you had to wait for it to air.
